The Maldives has two price realities. One is the resort island with a seaplane and a private pool. The other is a guesthouse on a local island, a public ferry and the same impossible blue water. Both are genuine; only one needs a honeymoon budget.
How the transfers price out
| Transfer | Approx. cost | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public ferry (MTCC) | MVR 10–40 per person | 1.5–4 hrs | Fixed timings, not daily, none on Fridays |
| Shared speedboat | USD 25–50 per person | 30–90 min | Most local-island guesthouses arrange it |
| Resort speedboat | USD 100–250 per person | 25–60 min | Return, per adult |
| Seaplane | USD 350–600 per person | 35–50 min | Daylight only — a late landing costs you a night |
Desk tip: Your flight arrival time decides your transfer bill. Land before 15:00 and you keep the seaplane and ferry options open; a 22:00 landing forces a Hulhumalé overnight.
Local islands worth the ferry
- Maafushi — the easiest first local island, excursions to spare
- Dhigurah — long sandbank, whale sharks offshore from May
- Thulusdhoo — surf breaks and a quieter main street
- Fulidhoo — small, slow, dolphins on the sunset cruise
The rules nobody mentions
Local islands are inhabited Muslim communities: swimwear is for designated bikini beaches, and alcohol is not sold. Most guesthouses run a floating bar or a resort day trip if that matters to you. Knowing this before you book is the difference between a great week and a disappointed one.
Season
January to April is the dry window and the priciest. May to October brings short, heavy showers, lower rates and the best whale-shark odds. The sea is warm all year.
