Kashmir in Winter: Snow, Shikaras and What Actually Stays Open

Winter is when Kashmir stops being a postcard and becomes an experience. Snow sits on the chinars, Dal Lake steams at dawn, and Gulmarg turns into one of Asia's highest ski resorts. It is also the season that needs the most honest planning.

What is open, and when

MonthSrinagarGulmargPahalgam
DecemberOpen, cold, shikaras runEarly snow, gondola phase 1Open, light snow
JanuaryOpen, coldest weeksFull ski seasonOpen, heavy snow possible
FebruaryOpen, snowfall likelyBest powderOpen, roads cleared slowly

Desk tip: Sonamarg stays closed through peak winter — if someone sells you a December Sonamarg day trip, ask again. We would not.

Where to stay

  • Dal Lake houseboat — pick one with a bukhari (wood heater) and hot-water confirmation in writing
  • Gulmarg — ski-in hotels sell out first; book 8–10 weeks ahead for January
  • Srinagar hotels on Boulevard Road for lake views without the houseboat chill
Gulmarg after fresh snow — the gondola runs weather permitting.

Packing, briefly

Thermals, a windproof outer layer, waterproof shoes with grip, and gloves you can still hold a phone in. Everything else you can hire in Gulmarg — including ski gear and snow boots.

“Winter Kashmir rewards flexible plans. Keep one buffer day: a single snowfall can close the Gulmarg road for a morning.”
